More than 30 works and a precious collection of drawings shed light on the continuity characterizing the work of this Modena artist, balanced between psychological exploration and surreality, dream and play, fiction and chronicle. This exhibition offers a significant cross section of Vaccari’s works: his beginnings, the eighties and nineties, and more recent works, including never-before-seen works from public and private collections

Vaccari’s work is entirely personal, unfettered by the trends of the moment, and he is still independent, which makes him difficult to classify. The artist defines his own visual universe, populated by a series of discordant and ironic, almost Fellini-esque characters portrayed in well-defined scenes. In his poses, proportions, and pictorial compositions, as well as in the expressions of his subjects, the way he violently stretches reality is disorienting, but not so much that it makes the scenes implausible.

Painted in two different centuries, what his paintings from the first and second part share are surreal depictions, senseless gestures, sexual allusions, metaphysical environments, and suspended atmospheres. The exhibition itinerary mixes the two periods, giving precedence to combining themes and styles over chronology, in order to pursue a continuity of expression. Although the themes are consistent, the works from the end of the millennium have better defined contours, flat colors, and flatter brushstrokes. Instead, his more recent works have features that appear more fragmented, shapes that have been broken down, and overlapping pictorial touches.
