Herta Ottolenghi Wedekind (Berlin, 1885-Acqui, 1953) was not only an enlightened art patron but also one of the main figures in the extraordinary season of the decorative arts of the 1920s and 1930s.

In 1922 patented an innovative process to create designs for applied artworks based on symmetrically duplicating abstract patterns using random ink splotches similar to those of the contemporary Rorschach inkblot test. Herta used these shapes to decorate tapestries, carpets, pillows, room dividers, and both woven and hand embroidered textiles for furnishings, and because of them, triumphed in the most important decorative arts shows in Munich, Paris, Berlin, Monza, Viareggio, and Milan.

The 21 tapestries displayed by Herta Ottolenghi Wedekind are proof of the total freedom and random nature of her artwork, uncovering surprising connections with contemporary surrealist and dadaist styles, the expression of her boundless spirit through vibrant form and changing color.
