Asite-specific installation – the artist’s tribute to the venue – and over 30 works, most of which have never been displayed before or have been specially made for the occasion, are included in the exhibition, named Sembianze agli occhi miei (Semblances in my Eyes), after a famous line from Ultimo canto di Saffo by Giacomo Leopardi.
The more recent paintings are the continuation of that exploration of the constituents of colour – light, shadow, outlines and opaqueness, nuances – that has been the artist’s signature since his beginnings, in the Seventies, developing into a wider, more rarefied dimension like the one on display here. The exhibition includes Linee, a triptych made in 1978, juxtaposed to a 2019 one in which the straightforward geometry of the young artist’s work turns into a blurred, impalpable hue.
The exhibition provides visitors a deep appreciation of the tireless pursuits of one of the outstanding figures in the Tridentine arts scene while reaffirming the cultural vocation of the Galleria Civica and its bond with the local area.
