The Mart is turning a spotlight on Fausto Pirandello, a great painter of the 20th century whose two important works, "Composizione" and "Nudo in prospettiva", both painted in 1923, are preserved at the Mart.
The exhibition traces the artist's history through 50 works and a thematic layout that accentuates the introspective nature of his research. The Mart’s exhibition rooms are featuring such iconic works as "Bagnanti [Bathers]", "Donne e salamandra [Women and Salamander]" and the famous portrait of his father Luigi, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature.
Over the course of his career, Pirandello switched from the analytical language of northern European influences to the cubist and abstract decomposition of the post-war period, shifting then to the expressionism of his "Roman School" years to finally return, in later life, to an extreme representation of humanity. Considered by critics to be a trailblazer, Pirandello foreshadowed certain aspects of painting in the second half of the 20th century, from Lucian Freud to contemporary figurative art.
