Urban artist Andrea Ravo Mattoni revisits classical Italian tradition by reproducing the works of the greatest painters of the past on large walls, in cities or on private buildings. Ravo was invited to the Mart by Vittorio Sgarbi, and he reproduced one of Antonello da Messina's masterpieces, St Sebastian (c. 1478), in the large atrium. The reproduction, realised in wall and spray paint, is monumental: it measures 1400 cm by 750 cm. Ravo, who doesn’t do practice runs or preparatory drawings but works directly on the final surface, worked on the piece from 2 to 5 May, while the museum was open, and established a performative relationship with visitors. On the same days, he met with over two hundred students from primary, lower and upper secondary schools as part of the Mart's Education and Mediation Area projects. This project of the Mart is also intended as a tribute to the major exhibition on Antonello da Messina produced in 2013, which for the first time involved a dialogue between classical and contemporary art.
