Squares do not (normally) appear in nature | Mart

On 20-23 February, Mart hosted the theatre installation Squares Do Not (Normally) Appear in Nature by OHT - Office for Human Theatre.  The event was part of the public program of the European project The Floor is Yours.

OHT and Mart’s Education Area focused on Josef Albers, a painter, colour theorist, and teacher at the Bauhaus, Black Mountain College and Yale University. Audiences were drawn into an engaging perceptive experience, which started with the presentation of a painting by the artist exhibited in the museum's Collections (Study to Homage to the Square:  Still Remembered, 1965-56).

OHT's work narrated the artistic research of Josef Albers by giving shape to seemingly abstract themes and involving all the senses. The project presented visual and sound experiments in a space without actors, a cube where colour was crossed by light, fog, glass and images that became the centre of the scene.

The project for schools, co-designed by OHT and the Mart's Education Area, began with an analysis of Albers‘ work in the museum's Collections, followed by a viewing of the theatrical performance and a Q&A with the author of the show, Filippo Andreatta. It concluded by experimenting with the multiple colour and proportional combinations of Albers’ squares. Students engaged with the languages of modern art, experiencing the poetics of one of the pioneers of abstract art in the 20th century.

Squares Do Not (Normally) Appear in Nature was also presented at the European project residency, with a final performance that was viewed by around 130 people.
