Poetry Slam workshop | mumok

The public program of the Museum Moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig Wien (mumok) in Vienna featured Poetry Slam, a successful artistic production combining writing and live performance, which uses poetry as a vibrant way to share language. Whether funny or profound, rap or prose, quiet or loud, anything goes as long as the spoken word is in the spotlight.
During two workshops held on 25 and 26 November 2023, participants learnt how to write their own texts, find their own voice and play with language through writing exercises. The activity led by Mieze Medusa and Yasmin Hafedh with their slam-team MYLF (Mother You'd Like to Flow with) was attended by more than 25 teenagers from families supported by the Nachbarinnen association, a partner of the Vienna Museum in the project The Floor is Yours.
What does it mean to be a woman on the stages of this world? How do you build friendships and established characters on stage? What is a taboo and what can we do about it? These are some of the questions shared with the participants during the workshop.
The feedback from the young people was extremely positive, even though it was hard at first to motivate them to take part in the workshop. In the end, however, most of the participants told their families that they had a lot of fun writing and poetry slamming. Some also said that they intend to continue experimenting with this form of expression.
