International Day of Persons with Disabilities | Mart

Since its foundation, Mart has been committed to promoting cultural debates in the community, focusing on inclusion and active participation and involving local residents.

On the International Day of People with Disabilities 2023, Mart devoted ten days - from 22 November to 1 December 2023 - to events, conferences, workshops, guided tours in LIS (Italian Sign Language), and specialised training on accessibility issues.

With a view to reaching new audiences, Mart's project The Floor is Yours involved closer collaboration and co-design with social cooperatives. Activities were devised with the participation and collaboration of the local organisations working with people with disabilities, such as Cooperativa Impronte, Unione Ciechi, and Cooperativa Sociale Villa Maria.

The packed calendar of events started with two information and training events: the first on 22 November for high school students from Liceo Artistico Fortunato Depero in Rovereto, the second on 23 November for a group of Mart employees and collaborators.

After Liceo Depero, it was the turn of Rovereto's Arcivescovile Middle School, which on 28 and 29 November and 1 December took part in a screen printing workshop conducted by Impronte Cooperative's clients.

On the same days, a number of special tours of the Collections and temporary exhibitions took place.  On 28 November, the ‘tactile’ tour for blind and visually impaired people (already part of the museum's long-standing tours) was extraordinarily held at the temporary exhibition L’uomo Senza Qualità [The man with no qualities]:  The Collection of Gian Enzo Sperone.  On 29 November, two classes from Liceo Artistico visited the Mart collections guided by Enrico Tozzi, who is part of the ‘Talenti Abili’ project aimed at the employability of people with disabilities.  On 29 November, a client of Cooperativa Sociale Villa Maria joined the Mart’s reception staff for a day, welcoming visitors and patrons.

Finally, 30 November was the day of the Recovery College project, organised by the Rovereto Centre for Mental Health - Futuro in Circolo (ASSP).  The aim of the training session was to promote a change of attitudes, values, goals and feelings about mental health.

These days were a great opportunity for students and the participating public to forge new relationships and experience the museum from a new point of view, highlighting the role of people with disabilities.
