Dish towels. Italy made by hand | Mart

Mart, Edoardo Meneghini

Enzo Umbaca is an Italian artist who lives and works in Milan. A few years ago he started a work in progress that involves all regions of Italy and aims to build a large map of the country based on a common household object: dish towels. The dish towels printed with regional maps, a common souvenir until not so long ago, form the basis for this art project that the Mart wanted to include as part of The Floor is Yours.  The premises of this work align closely with the objectives of the European project: to listen, dialogue, exchange ideas, and create new visions together. The dish towels are embroidered by the participants during the workshops conducted by the artist: a way to reflect on the place we live in and transform it, creatively and ideally.

For the event that took place at the Mart on 9 February a map of Trentino Alto Adige-Süd Tirol had to be specially created and printed, as there were no longer any on the market. The monuments and sites of interest illustrated on the map included, of course, the Mart and its second location in Rovereto, the Casa d'Arte Futurista Depero.

The eighteen people who took part in the workshop worked in pairs to modify the map, identifying a number of themes: from the excessive tourism that is causing damage to some mountain areas, to folklore interpreted ironically, to the need to highlight passes and roads that lead across borders, to foreground certain social problems, or highlight climate emergencies.
