Cult North workshop | Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen

As a partner of Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam, Cult North association is dedicated to art education and supporting young, self-taught artists, helping them to enhance and develop their talent professionally and making art and the world of culture more accessible.

Through its established relationship with Cult North, the museum also reached out to other local organisations such as The Word Club, an association of young poets and word artists.

The members of The World Club and the museum's curators - Gianni Antonia, a trainee in the curatorial and education department, and Amira Gad, curator of modern and contemporary art at the Depot - engaged in a conversation about the meaning of art and the power of narratives. The significance of the museum's colonial heritage was highlighted, a topic the young artists focused on.

How do we relate to these objects?  How do students view them?  What hidden stories can be discovered?  These are some of the questions that emerged during the guided tour, which focused on the objects that bear most witness to the Netherlands' colonial past.  The Word Club's observation of the collections brought to light a sentiment that is now prevalent in other European institutions as well, and prompted the museum to explore this topic further.

The young artists of The World Club used writing, their preferred medium, as a device to process and share the emotions and thoughts generated by this experience.

On 1 March 2025, during Night of the Museums, some members of The World Club, with the musical accompaniment of Matt Bonilla, presented their poetry to the public, sharing the thoughts sparked by their experience of the Boijmans' collections.
