Closing seminar | Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam

The closing of The Floor is Yours was marked with a seminar held at the Museum Boijmans van Beuningen in Rotterdam with the participation of museums and local partners. The first day was dedicated to an internal discussion, with the aim of drawing conclusions from two years of work and reflecting on experiences and lessons learned. This was achieved through short workshops designed to stimulate the sharing of ideas and impressions. In the one led by the Mart, everyone was invited to spin a wheel and choose a sentence to associate with one of the many images documenting the two years of activity. The words chosen are at the heart of many of the project's key initiatives: creating connections, triggering transformations, sharing good practices, listening, getting out of one’s comfort zone, being together informally...In the Boijmans and Mumok workshops, images were also used to foster dialogue.
On the second day, which was open to the public, the museums presented some of their latest events; the importance of participation in museums was discussed (with a talk by Lorna Cruickshank), and the following conclusions and recommendations (best practices) were reached:
🔹Motivation and commitment: a project like this only works with the right motivation from all parties.
🔹Long-term relationships: building a bond, trust and equality in working together takes time.
🔹An open mind: it is important for the museum to explore new working methods and programs for the public.
🔹Getting to know each other to develop projects based on a genuine relationship with the communities one wants to work with, privileging their point of view.
🔹Involve community members in museum structures: community representatives should be involved in museum decisions.
🔹Involve all areas of the museum: welcoming new audiences is not the exclusive task of the education areas, but requires the involvement of all.
